NDIS Psychosocial Pathway Project

Design of a NDIS Psychosocial Pathway

In January 2018, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) engaged Mental Health Australia to conduct consultations to inform the design of a tailored National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) pathway to improve the experiences of people with psychosocial disability entering the Scheme.

As part of this project, Mental Health Australia conducted a series of consultation workshops across Australia (in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Townsville). Over 170 people attended these consultations including mental health consumers, carers, service providers, health professionals, NDIA representatives and other policy makers. Mental health consumers and carers made up 43% of overall workshop participation. Project staff also conducted a teleconference specifically for health professionals.

Drawing on learnings and feedback from these consultations, a report has been provided to the NDIA with recommendations on:

  • How the NDIS can respond appropriately to the needs and concerns of people with psychosocial disability, and
  • Strategies that will enable NDIS staff to interact with participants and prospective participants with psychosocial disability - as well as their carers and families - appropriately.
