How do we best support Australians at risk of suicide?

World Mental Health Day is next week and the latest statistics on suicide in Australia have injected even more urgency on dealing with the mental well-being of our community.

Nationally, more than 3,000 people took their own lives in 2017 — making suicide now the leading cause of death among people aged between 15 and 44 years of age.

Mental health experts have told us here on Breakfast it's time for the Federal Government to adopt a national target for the reduction of suicide rates, arguing a concerted campaign could see death rates cut by a quarter over five years.

If anything in this story has caused you distress you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
