NDIA Mental Health Sector Reference Group Meeting

In late October, Mental Health Australia attended the National Mental Health Sector Reference Group Meeting in Melbourne. This group was established to develop a strong working relationship between the mental health sector and the NDIA. It is chaired by Strategic Adviser to the NDIA, Mr Eddie Bartnik. Membership consists of consumers, carers, peak associations, NDIS Independent Advisory Council members and key government representatives, including Mental Health Commissions.

At the most recent meeting, the group heard updates on the NDIA’s mental health work plan as well as reports relating to NDIS data and the Agency’s approach to engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The group also heard an update from Richmond Wellbeing who discussed the recently completed workshops, delivered under Mental Health Australia’s NDIS Capacity Building project to build the capacity of mental health consumers and carers to engage with the NDIS.

A communique will be provided in the near future, which will be circulated via this update and published on the NDIS website.

New NDIS psychosocial resource online

The NDIA and the Mental Health Coordinating Council of NSW (MHCC) have established a partnership to develop an online resource to support people with a primary psychosocial disability (or mental health condition) to better understand the NDIS and how it relates to a person’s recovery journey.

Whether you are a person living with a mental health condition, a family member, carer or worker they are looking for your input to help them design this resource to make sure it meets the needs of people affected by mental health problems.

The survey is available online (please click here) and closes on Tuesday 15 November 2016.

NDIS in the Fifth National Mental Health Plan

The Federal Department of Health recently released a consultation draft of the Fifth National Mental Health Plan. Mental Health Australia is assisting the Department to conduct face-to-face consultation workshops about the plan across the country between now and early December 2016. The Department has also initiated an online survey for those who cannot attend a face to face workshop. You can find the consultation draft and information about how to get involved in the consultation on the Department of Health’s website (please click here).

The draft plan acknowledges the importance of monitoring NDIS transition (particularly mental health consumer and carer experience) and considering the community mental health support needs of people who are ineligible for an individually funded package.

The Plan’s Action 3 includes development of national guidelines with an aim of clarifying roles and responsibilities across health and community support services. This includes ensuring the NDIS responds to changes on the ground relating to the Fifth National Mental Health Plan and and simultaneous roll out of the NDIS. The plan’s Action 4 proposes that the Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Principal Committee will report to Health Ministers on NDIS and mental health reform policy implementation issues for people with mental illness. The plan also notes that regions should develop opportunities to obtain consumer and carer feedback on service quality and planning.

Mental Health Australia recently consulted with its members on the draft plan and is developing a submission in response to the consultation process. To keep up to date with this, please sign up to receive Mental Health Australia’s CEO updates (please click here).
