Report

Commissioned by Mental Health Australia, this report by Urbis presents a broad based synthesis of current research with economic implications applied to an Australian context. It provides thought provoking reading for policy makers, academics and commissioners of mental health services.

Newsletters / Bulletins

At the beginning of the week, under the fig trees in Mullumbimby, I had the privilege of watching a diverse and talented group of individuals share their stories – their unique experiences of mental illness – on stage in front of a live audience at the Renew Fest This is My Brave show.

Newsletters / Bulletins

This week I was pleased to accept an invitation to speak at the Hobson’s Bay Mental Health Professionals Network in Melbourne. After a week of sometimes turgid budget meetings and analysis, it is always re-invigorating to touch base with the people doing the real work, on the ground.

General

Perspectives Newsletter - October 2014. Despite considerable expansion in resources for treatment and services for mental health over the past two decades there is no evidence for any improvement in the mental health of Australians. Professor Anthony Jorm calls for a National Strategy for the Prevention of Mental Disorders to address this imbalance and place more emphasis on preventative approaches rather than treatment.

Submission

In this submission the MHCA argues that the burden of disease and cost to the economy from both mental illness and co-occuring physical health conditions cannot be ignored and recommends that the National Preventative Health Agency identify the prevention of mental illness as an issue of growing importance and include it as a research priority.

Media Releases

The Mental Health Council of Australia ( MHCA ) welcomes the announcement of a $1.5 billion commitment to mental health by the federal Liberal Party. The Liberal opposition has committed to a massive increase in mental health funding, including funding an additional 60 headspace youth mental health centres, 20 new Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centres and 800 acute and sub-acute early intervention beds.

Media Releases

A group of leading national prevention and community health organisations led by the Australian of the Year, Professor Patrick McGorry, is calling on the Prime Minister, premiers and chief ministers to include fundamental principles on prevention, mental and Indigenous health at next week’s Council of Australian Governments meeting. “Unless we see reforms in these areas we will not reduce Australia’s dependence on hospital based care”, Professor McGorry said.

Submission

This submission has been prepared by a group of leading national organisations involved in every aspect of suicide prevention. It represents a comprehensive analysis of the issues set out in the Inquiry’s terms of reference and presents practical ways to reduce the terrible toll on the Australian community from suicide and suicidal behaviour.
