Funding package to support LGBTQIA+ = Victorians

The Victorian State Government will deliver a $900,000 package to = eight organisations in order to help respond to the additional = demand placed on organisations. The toxic public debate around = the hurtful, divisive =E2=80=98Let Women Speak=E2=80=99 march =E2=80=93 = an anti-trans rally =E2=80=93 last weekend has had a significant impact = on members of the transgender community and their loved ones.

The funding package will boost counselling and = family therapy, referrals, and peer support to ensure Victorians can = find and access needed supports.

Proposal to hold Senate inquiry into ADHD = assessment

The Australian Senate has = formally backed a proposal from Australian Greens Senator Jordon = Steele-John to hold a Senate inquiry into attention deficit = hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) assessment and support services in = Australia.

Senator = Jordon Steele-John proposed the inquiry in the hope of addressing common = barriers to adequate ADHD assessment and care, as well as establishing = possible policy interventions to improve accessibility and outcomes in this = space.

Genetic link in depression and schizophrenia = confirmed

An international team of = scientists led by University of Wollongong researcher Dr Natalie Matosin = has confirmed a genetic association with severe psychiatric disorders = such as depression and schizophrenia. The study, published in the latest = edition of Acta Neuropathologica, brought together decades of evidence = from around the globe suggesting that the FKBP5 gene may raise risk to = mental illness in a subset of people.

=E2=80=9CThe FKBP5 gene is one of the very few = genes in psychiatry with good evidence that it raises risk of developing = a mental illness such as depression, schizophrenia, PTSD and = anxiety,=E2=80=9D Dr Matosin said.

Brimbank Mental Health and Wellbeing now taking = walk-ins

Appointments and referrals = are no longer required for individuals aged 26 and over wishing to seek = help for their mental health and wellbeing at Brimbank Mental Health and = Wellbeing Local. Initially opening late last year for telehealth = and outreach support, the Brimbank service will now also be available = for support over weekends.

Cohealth in partnership with Clarity Health Care and the University of Melbourne are delivering the = service.

Have your say in the upcoming NDIA = review

Monitoring and reviewing = help the NDIA to ensure that their price control framework is = appropriate. Part of that process is an Annual Pricing Review.

Last year the Minister for the NDIS, the Hon. = Bill Shorten, announced the NDIS Review. The review will be finalised in = October 2023 and is expected to look at the design, operations, and = sustainability of the NDIS, including matters related to pricing.

Separately, the NDIA is also running the = 2022-23 Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Pricing Review. The = SDA Pricing Review occurs every 5 years and looks at pricing = arrangements for SDA-related areas only.

Submissions are encouraged from everyone, including advocacy = groups, participants, nominees and carers, employees, government, = providers, plan managers, professional and provider peak bodies, = researchers, and workers’ unions.

Take the Carer Wellbeing = Survey

The Carer Wellbeing Survey asks people to = share their experiences =E2=80=93 past and present =E2=80=93 of being a = carer and the support services they use, including the Australian = Government Carer Gateway.

Participants = can choose if they would like to complete a long or short version of the = Survey and it is available in English, simplified Chinese, Arabic, = Italian and Vietnamese.

The survey was = designed in collaboration between the University of Canberra, the = Department of Social Services, and Carers Australia.

National Directory for ending loneliness

Ending Loneliness Together = has launched Australia=E2=80=99s first national online = directory to support people experiencing loneliness in building = meaningful social connections.

Developed in collaboration with Infoxchange, people who have = experienced loneliness, and service providers, the Ending = Loneliness Directory provides a national database of organisations, = groups and services offering opportunities for connection and support for people = experiencing loneliness =E2=80=93 all on a centralised and = easy to navigate website. 

The online directory currently has over 1000 = organisations listed across the country. Users can search based on = their role, preferred type of connection and location. The directory can = also be useful for social prescribing to support referring = professionals who have patients or clients present with signs of = loneliness but are unsure what support to link them = to.

Service Finder 2.0

The Department of Health and Aged Care released the new and = updated Service Finder this week, with 16 languages available and 300 = different types of health service.

The Digital and Services Design branch is inviting = feedback on the updated directory.
