Quiet reflection in the wake of the referendum
On behalf of Mental Health Australia, I want to acknowledge the sorrow and grief many First Nations peoples are currently experiencing following the result of the Voice to Parliament referendum.
The Uluru Dialogue, which represents the cultural authority of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, released a statement requesting time to mourn and deeply consider the consequence of this outcome.
We will continue to work closely with Gayaa Dhuwi and other First Nations-led organisations in the pursuit of social justice, equity, and better social and emotional wellbeing outcomes.
Mental Health Australia strongly supports the Good Yarn Guidelines, and joins with leading First Nations mental health organisations in calling for Australian media outlets to lift the standard and accuracy of reporting on First Nations issues. This would help to reduce harms to the mental health of First Nations peoples, which can occur due to inaccurate, offensive or insensitive reporting.
During this challenging time, crisis support from First Nations counsellors is available through 13 YARN (13 92 76), and immediate assistance is available through Lifeline (13 11 14).
