Position Statement - Employment and Mental Health

Everyone has the right to work and to free choice of employment. Engaging in meaningful and contributing activity, including employment, is strongly associated with positive mental health and wellbeing. However, people with experience of mental health challenges face barriers to employment including stigma, discrimination, and lack of support to engage in the workforce.

This position statement outlines key actions to improve employment opportunities and participation for people with experience of mental health challenges, and has been developed following Mental Health Australia members highlighting employment as a key social determinant priority. Mental Health Australia particularly thanks the lived experience representatives and member organisations who contributed to this statement.
