mental health reform

Media Releases

The Mental Health Council of Australia has welcomed the appointment of Professor Pat McGorry as Australian of the Year for 2010. Professor McGorry is not only a highly respected leader within the mental health sector, he is someone who has changed the way we respond to youth mental health in Australia and internationally.

Media Releases

Up to 80 per cent of inmates in Australian prisons have a mental illness and magistrates in regional areas are sending mentally ill people to jail as there is often no treatment or mental health facilities available.

Submission

The MHCA emphasises the need to extend proposed new benefits to include all carers, not only carers of children. Benefits must also be available to young people who care for an adult with a mental illness.

Submission

The MHCA welcomes the review of this important legislation, and on the whole welcomes the proposed changes; however, also supports the submission by the Australian Human Rights Commission, and endorses the criticisms and recommendations contained therein.
